Gary Watts is a top Power4Vets Graduate from the Northwest region who has just recently passed his NERC Certification Reliability Coordinator Exam. His stellar performance throughout the training was reflected in the fact that he has finished the training in just over a month.
IncSys spoke with Gary just before his test to ask him his thoughts of Power4Vets and the Prospect of moving into the Power Industry.
Gary is a Navy Veteran, who was a Navy Nuke – Electricians Mate, Load Dispatcher, and Power Plant Operator. He went to the Nuke Power School and has interested in using his military training and skills to transfer into the electric utility industry as a power system operator.
“Any Navy Nuke that wants to get into the power program, should get into this [Power4Vets] Program. There is no reason not to. It’s paid for by a government grant, you do the training at your own pace. For me its been very fast, but if you don’t have the time, you can take up to 6 months to get it done.”
“Some of the things from the Power4Vets program that have trained me – various simulations have been phenomenal: complete blackouts, system islanding, and voltage collapse. Some of the simulations are based around weather events causing high voltage lines having to be taken out of service and it has been really good to raise my awareness of how all the pieces of the interconnection work together.”
